This is quite a personalized one. I have a Ning community I administer and there's no good way to share community news. I'd love to have a large (fully functional - not just rss) widget for my slinkset site that I could fit on to my front page of my ning site.
so, i put the widget in the side-bar in the same slinkset site. i quite like it there, especially if you guys are going to start to allow more menu items for categories and users could quickly able to view the most popular at the minute.
anyway the back-ground of the title is dark-dark grey, while if i put the widget anywhere else it is white as it should be. my text-color is #000 so it doesnt show against the dark grey. anyone know why this is happening or what i could do to fix it?..thanks!
That sounds familiar. I'll look into it.
OK, this should be fixed. You'll have to save your sidebar HTML again (and might have to change it slightly to get the change to register - add some spaces at the end).
thanks brett, forgot about this. tried it out again. seems that the header collapses which actually looks great as i dont need the title of the slinkset in the widget if it is on that slinkset. anyway i dont think i'll be using it there until there are sub-slinksets to categorise links, if that ever comes about (no pressure :) so its no biggie.
also my site title is a little on the heavy side as it includes the site name and a description of the site for seo, it takes up 2+ lines at a width of 200px so perhaps people would be more inclined to use the widget if the it wasn't there or if the widget could just include a shorter version of the title or just the domain somehow.
what would be great too is if the widget could contain the recent tab also. but i guess there is the space factor and perhaps it is difficult to implement as clicking on it would lead to the actual site. for me though, i think i would value a recent tab over a submit tab.
anyway thanks again for your help and all your work on the amazing slinkset !
i had the same problem trying to use the standard slinkset widget with ning. They don't allow embedding <script> widgets directly. Instead, sign up at www.dapper.net and create a flash widget using your slinkset site feed. Then you can add this to ning without problem. You can also create google gadgets, etc. Works great!
Partially done. Go to /widgets on any site. Also note the link in the footer.
Hopefully we'll get out a fully functional version soon.
Why it doesn't work for privet sites?
It didn't seem to make sense for private sites. How would you envision it working? The widget is public while the site is private? You embed it and then only people who are already logged in see it? There's a lot of room for confusion there.
Ok, but I thought the solution of creating a random token could apply. My intention is to use it in a ning page were all users must login, once I can’t have a unique password for both tools, ning and slinkset
That makes sense. Thanks for the response. We'll have to look into it.
I would also very much like this. I'd stick it on my blog.
This would be great for us too. We're currently using this: http://grid.orch8.net/clippings/news.inuda.net/jlmarkwell/Inuda%20Network%20News but it looks pretty crappy on our ning page: http://www.inuda.net
Oh yeah, Ning is a good platform for you guys to develop for, when you're looking for extra platforms. There are almost no app developers for Ning.
